I wanted it to be something on the downlow, to take care of the chunk of our adblock users we've received support from over the years. We wanted to give back.
But a few people couldn't contain their excitement, and now the word is out. The rumors are true, SheezyArt is hosting an adblock party! You can join in anytime by downloading and enabling the adblock firefox extension.
If you're crazy enough to want to leave the adblock party, you can disable the extension in it's settings. Doing so will revoke your invitation and take you off the VIP list.
Hardcore adblock partiers will be happy to know that as long as you're on the VIP list, you'll be treated to the beats and strobes of the party free of charge, and ad free of course. No simplistic google advertisements to get in the way of your fun.
We appreciate the concern from some of our more legally inclined users who raised questions about YouTube's terms of use. I'm happy to inform you that the party incorporates the complete youtube embedded player, so we're in-line with their wishes. It's just hidden from view to prevent any distraction to the party. SheezyArt understands the typical adblock user doesn't appreciate distractions.
And don't worry, if anyone from youtube requests a change to the lineup, we will be glad to find some sick new beats.
I was talking to my mother, who's a nurse. And she says at that level a warning should have been issued.
If the computer runs at a normal speed, it can cause seizures.
I knew this flashing wasn't safe.
And the fact that some browsers may run things faster than others also adds to that. Already I hear of someone who had a seizure because of this flashing.
In the U.S., websites provided by federal agencies are governed by section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The Act says that pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and less than 55 Hz. Link to legislation
Im not from the U.S..
I'm english...And so are other people on this website.
So just going by a legislation from one country is a bit silly if you ask me.
And she's been a registered RGN for above 20 years now and holds a level 5 NVQ if im not mistaken... So yes, I think she doesn't need to sit her test again.
Then your mother is even less qualified to comment on the matter as she would have little to no knowledge of international law, nevermind internet best practices and standards.
Given that the Sheezy servers are located in the Dallas, TX, USA and not the UK, this is especially true. I'm neither American NOR English, although I've lived in both countries for a time. If you take issue with it, report them to the relevant authorities in Texas. Nothing will be done, however, as they're not breaking any laws and are observing standards that even the government does.
Uh huh. We're into the "friend of a friend" stage, now. That's the same as saying, "I know a guy who knows a guy who has a disorder that effects 1/200 people, making it a 0.5% chance to begin with, and that guy was unlucky enough to access sheezyart, a site which has the abysmal alexa traffic rank of 61,254. Furthermore, this guy, who was a friend of a friend, was using adblock, as opposed to adblock plus, or forgoing any adblocking software completely. Let's not forget that this thing wasn't even flashing that fast, and is taking up a generally small portion of the screen, Since only 3.27% of the general internet are using a resolution below 1024x768."
Those odds are fucking. Astronomical. Ever considered the fact that your friend of a friend might be LYING?
No, I will not sift through 527+ comments looking for something that's probably buried in a chain, and is telling me what you've already told me. I am not buying this. Read my post again. Calculate the odds. Use common sense. Please.
I would quote is for you, since you seem to not want to waste any oh-so-precious time, but it seems the evidence has been deleted. Most likely by Spencer or CC. So as much as I would like to share it with you, I cannot because someone is trying to save their own ass.
Anyway, it's been mentioned that since different machines may run this at different speeds, this may not be as safe as the admins thought it would be. Some will most likely run it at a faster, unsafe rate. But either way, it's unsafe anyway, since some users have reported nausea and headaches. So honestly, if they had common sense, they would not have pulled something this stupid. We have one case of someone having a seizure already, and multiple reports of headaches, etc. There could be much more than just those. So yeah, rapidly flashing images like that are not as safe as many would think.
Is it flash? A gif? Those both have set maximum framerates. Since this is generally tied to the machine's internal clock, that would take some serious fucking augmenting of the operating system. I doubt your friend of a friend possesses such a build of whatever OS they're running. On my corei7 machine here, I don't recall it being particularly offensive.
Should I relate to you the tale of that episode of Pokemon that caused thousands upon thousands of people, caught up in quite literally mass-hysteria, reporting seizure-LIKE symptoms without having actual seizures? Slap that kind of situation on the sheezy demographic and you have what would not so much make for a shitstorm as a fullblown shit-hurricane of hysteria. We're witnessing it right now. Not a single person, first handed, has come forward saying "Yeah I had a seizure guys. Sorry, here's my medical certificate, you might wanna change this". Are you really okay with being one of those people who help such things along?
Apparently, the flashing background was a script. Someone found the bit of coding for the flashing background.
Yeah, I know about that episode. But like I said, we can't tell who exactly had them. Hell, perhaps someone had one, but does not want to go back onto Sheezy to tell the admins they had one. And, as I have said, we have had one report. However, the evidence for that has been deleted. So I expect any other reports of seizures to be swept under the rug.
I use the computer at my school a lot to surf through sheezy. When I saw those flashing pages, i knew off the bat that it was bad news for people with epilepsy. So, being that there's many people like that here at my school, I logged off. >:[
also, I suffer from migraines. if that thing triggered a migraine(which hurt like hell), it could have deffinetly triggured a seizure....
If that's the case, you're whining at the wrong person. Go whine at the US government: Shit's legal, here's the legislation. see secion 1194.22 article j.
Like I said, some machines might run it faster than that. It depends on the machine and browser. Also, if it does induce headaches and nausea, I don't see how it should be considered safe.
considering my machine was assembled literally a couple of months ago, using current generation components, and that there's an extremely high chance that I'm using exactly the same browser build that everyone reporting both symptoms and stating their browser is using, I'd say that my machine is more likely to "run it faster" than most of the people here complaining of such incidents.
I just decompiled the gif and skimmed over the javascript. Again, set fucking FPS. What do I have to do to explain this to you? Sit you down? Go through it step by step? Explain what FPS means for your viewing? Explain how refresh rates could only decrease this framerate, not increase it? Have you, YOURSELF experienced any of this? No? Then why are you perpetuating everyone else's bullshit? Stop being a goddamn sheep and use your brain.
You know, you could try considering that people may be less able to tolerate flashing images than others, regardless of whether it is "safe" or not. Some may actually be much more sensitive to the flashing than others, and thus, it could cause seizures, or seizure-like symptoms. So it's not only dependent on the machine, but also the individual's sensitivity to flashing images.
And honestly, I don't know why you are throwing such a fit at me about this. But whatever floats your boat.
I'm "throwing a fit" partially because I'm absolutely flabbergasted that so many people are displaying such a horrible deficit of intelligence, partially because you seem to be one of the ringleaders perpetuating this bullshit. 2Hz is the standard that the U.S. fucking government works to. Anyone outside of that, taking into account our already-astronomical odds, is literally a freak of fucking nature, and I'm skeptical that such a person even exists.
Bottom line: They did their homework before this was implemented. It is safe. Based on pure, solid probability and statistics, nobody had a seizure. The likelihood of such a thing occurring from THIS particular instance is, bar none, astronomical.
Frankly, as much as you would like to believe that, I'm not one of the ringleader perpetuating the "bullshit", as you like to call it. Did you draw that conclusion just because my comment here happened to be the first?
As for the flashing and its speed: Safe? Ha. If it truly was safe, as you say, I doubt it would have caused nausea, headaches and such in some individuals. Even I began getting a slight headache from just a minute or two of the flashing. And like I said, not all machines would run it at the safer speed. There is still a chance of someone getting a seizure from this, whether the flashing is considered safe or not.
But tell you what, let's just agree to disagree, and carry one. Obviously, we do not see eye to eye on the matter, nor will we be able to convince each other to see it from the other's view.
No, I drew it because you're so valiantly defending it against all tangible reason. There were a number of measures you could have taken, along with everyone else, instead of bitching and moaning. Like blocking both the .gif and .css files that were causing the problem manually through your, GUESS WHAT? ADBLOCKER!
Either way, they've closed the party down, now. I hope you're happy. I installed adblock plus just to join, only to be evicted. Ho hum. :C
To tell you the truth, I only use Opera's adblocker, because the thing is so finicky and likes to take me to sites of ads I didn't even click on. And I'm not too sure if Opera would allow me to block those, so yeah. Otherwise I leave ads up on Firefox when it and Sheezy are not busy disagreeing with each other. But either way, I still found it annoying, and was still certain that it could pose problems to users sensitive to flashing images on screen.
I found their little banner to be rather humorous, yes.
Oh yeah, I'm so sure Spencer said to himself one day "Hmm, I wanna start an adblocker party. I shall include flashing red and yellow lights on many pages, too, just for the kicks. Oh wait, let me go see if that's a safe thing to do, cause, ya know, some of the users might have seizures..."
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever witnessed someone having a seizure? If you haven't, then I wouldn't be talking if I were you.
Oh yeah, it's pretty damn terrifying. I'm not going to dispute that. And yeah, I could definitely believe that Spencer and co. would cover their asses to a considerable degree before implementing anything that might even remotely piss someone off - the sheezy demographic will jump at the slightest thing, after all. Invoking lolsuits and e-lawyers at the drop of a hat~
I should probably make known at this point that the alleged seizure never actually happened. I spoke to someone close to the source who told me a very believable version. It seems the truth was stretched. This, coupled with the statistics I rattled off in the Kiwiwhatever thread brings us to one certain point:
No epileptics were harmed during the making of this shitstorm, nor would they have been, given the astronomically high odds of such an incident occurring. Headaches? Sure. Nausea? Yeah, why not. Seizures? No way.
Regardless if someone had a seizure or not this is just really pathetic. I don't even give a damn if it's safe or not because i'm not epileptic. Do you feel smarter and superior talking down to people like a grammar nazi and telling people to get common sense? It takes less common sense to understand no sensible person is going to sit with the idea. You should reread everything you said because you just sound like an asshole to me.
I think the idea of someone having a seizure is far-fetched but you shouldn't be pitching a bitch because people disagree with a completely dumb idea to begin with. Or are you just mad because you wanted to join in this retarded 'adblock party'? I don't care if you can disable it (i didn't even have to endure it, thank god) but it doesn't change the fact that it was entirely unnecessary, childish and idiotic (this is also 3 words to sum sheezyart up with. inb4 banhammer)
Literally all this adblock party accomplished was drive people away from a already dying website.
- I couldn't care less if you failed English 101. The last thing you should be ripping on me for is the presence of vaguely correct spelling and grammar.
- Yes, I am the world's biggest douche. I know this. Everyone knows this.
- It turns out both you and I are right, the person in question didn't have a seizure, they just got a little nauseous.
- Yes, I wanted to join the adblock party. My VIP ticket was revoked. Ho hum.
- If you really care that much about "unnecessary, childish and idiotic" occurrences, nobody's keeping you here.
- Sheezy isn't dying, but adblock is cutting its ad revenue. Those people are dead weight. I'd say good riddance, in their position.
As for you: Why are you attempting to stir up another shitstorm with such a combative nature, yet at the same time saying that doing so is pathetic? ;|
Weeaboo emote? Oh my christ, "English 101" is synonymous with "Basic English", you lovable fucking tool. Common knowledge, much??
Go take your baseless antagonistic tendencies, and apply them to a better suited situation. Like some 13 year old sonic sprite editors or something. You know. Shit nobody cares about.
It sounds like Sheezy has taken precations for their users. They obviously can't control how a persons individual set up will respond but a user who has issues with flashes has been informed and can make their own choice.
All the glitches on the site, users having problems uploading, comments disappearing, errors left and right, user pages glitching, and this was a higher priority?
Glad to see that in the 5 years I've known you guys, your sense of priorities hasn't changed.
Opera has it built in as far as I see. In fact I don't think I ever didn't see your ads. Either way I don't click them so I don't see what difference it makes. At the end of the deal, you're the one who just made a gigantic ass out of yourself.
Sorry to point out the opinions of the now many people who are going to lol at this.
Wow. Not even trying to hide. Not even trying to be sensible.
You ask for money when you badger users, leave bugs unfixed for more than a whole year, and not help anyone. And you waste time that could be spent on bettering this site JUST to flip the bird at people who want to not see ads?
That's why a LOT of people use Adblock and others. I haven't stopped using it since a huge exploit spread over Myspace and was hacking people through the ads run on the site. Ads can very easily bog your system down, and some can also be very dangerous, even if you never click on them.
But that's not what this is about. This is FUNNY to them. They don't care about the users.
People say DeviantArt sold out, but at least when they ask for money they give you something back.
I have no idea if I even have an ad blocker. I use firefox, but I'm not seeing any abnormalities. Thank god. Whatever this is, it sounds really stupid, and it's annoying someone who I linked to test my new game demo upload, so cut it out.
