OK, I WROTE A LETTER TO ROY DISNEY ON HIS WEBSITE TWO WEEKS AGO, AND...AND...AND...HE WROTE BACK! OH, MY, GOD. I'M GONNA CRY. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Disneys,

Hi...I'm just a teenager with a dream, I have dreamed to be a Disney animator since I was a little girl. I've drawn, drawn, drawn, and I still do. It completely devastates me to know the truth about the 1300 animators who lost their jobs in 2002, and now, I don't know where I am anymore. I don't know WHO I am. I thought I had it all planned. Please, I NEED to know...is there the slightest hope that cel animation will come back? Ever? I really need to know, because I have to apply to College soon, and I have the choice to study cel animation or 3D animation. If I choose 3D animation, I'll get a job, 100% sure... but it's CEL animation that I REALLY want, it's what I crave and live for, I'm falling apart and I need help...

Is there any hope?

Catherine

Dear Catherine,

There is always hope. That is lesson # 1. Lesson # 2 is that life is a path, it's just not a straight one! 3D animation is just ONE way to tell a story. Your artistry will always be critical to a story, no matter what the medium. I think you should learn as much as you can about the craft, 3D, 2D or otherwise. The Disney artists of old would take their lunch hours to go down to the zoo or to the park to watch and draw. They did whatever they could to learn more about what makes something come alive. The medium is never as important as the story. Please don't lose hope. Please stay with your dream.

Roy P. Disney

CAN YOU FRICKEN BELIEVE IT!?!?!?!!

That's quite awesome! and I do say stick with what you want. I'm gonna have to make that choice soon, too, but I'm gonna go the path to where I can do what I want. Its been my life dream to animate, though I possess a love more for anchor points and computer programs to animate with than hand-drawing animation, so 3d seems more suited for me. But 2d drawing is far from dead. internet sites use 2d for animation more than 3d, cartoon network, Disney, and Nickelodeon still use 2d way more than 3d, not to mention indy toons, storyboarding for movies, videogaming, anime, and the like. I hope you stick with what you love, because I enjoy it!

Out of curiosity, have you ever worked with Flash or any other animation program to get used to animating? (as opposed to just drawing)? If so, I'd love to see some here.
