Dystopia/Utopia

Utopia this is the idea of a perfect city, society, or place. What most people don't realize is every body has a different Ideas of perfect, fair, and equality thus making it a Dystopia. The concepts are good on paper but when they are put into practice they usually go wrong. In this essay I'm going to reference three story's that have this subject in them to point out this subject.


The first book I have chosen for this is the book Anthem. My controlling idea Dystopia/Utopia relates to this because the entire society is controlled by the government. When your are first born you are taken away from your mother and the government gives you a name. The government then raises you from birth. Next they force you into to a job that you problem don’t want and its usually a job your not good at and they fore you to mate for children you'll never get to raise and will live the same life you do, then when your old they put you in the house of the useless to die. They also have no free will what so ever. The idea is good for some people be cause they are unsure if they will be safe, have a job, or a partner later in life so they might like this idea because no matter what your future is secure unlike to day society. The authors point in this story is the idea equality is good in theory but when is it put to practice slowly that equality turns in to slavery.

In the next story they try to make the perfect society by making every body equal not status wise but mental & physically. Some people think a utopia is where everybody is the same and no one person is better that another. There are two ways to make this possible breed humans down till ever human is the same(that would probably lead to our race dieing out) or they handicap them, there are dozens of ways they do this but I am only going to tell a few ways they do it in “Harrison Bergeron”. If you’re strong they put heavy weights on your shoulders and on your waist if you’re fast. A mask on your face is your pretty and implants that give off horrible sound if you think to hard to make you
Lose your thoughts and those were just a few of the handicaps. In this story they do just that and put those on every body the parents watching the tv See there son on tv and when the father notices he collapse to the ground from thinking to hard. There son broke out of the prison that he was placed in because he keep out growing his handicaps. When he broke out he went to the dance studio and when there on live tv he broke off his handicaps, the dancers, and the musicians. Then he and the ballerina started to dance higher and higher and they almost hit the ceiling the women that handicaps everybody shot both of them and told the musicians if they didn’t put there handicaps back on they would be next. The author’s point of this story is: it my seem like equality but is it really when your individuality and right to life is taken away?
