Well he said he'll take out the troops before he was elected. I agree he shouldn't have said that because he didn’t really know what was going on in these warzones.
For him sending in more troops - at first it might seem like he lied and he isn't doing the right thing but think about it closely
More Troops mean more resources available means that the war can be resolved more quickly. What bush did was keep it cooking so the arms industry could sell weapons to both sides and gain.
Obama tries to end it and to end it quick they need more people. Let's face it - everyone who has ever played a RTS will know that you can maybe hold your position with a few units to not lose the fight but to win the fight you need to either have a tactical advantage (which in this case is on the Insurgent's side) or an advantage in equipment and numbers.
To all you Americans - Your previous government caused a mess; now just have to stand through the process of wiping it up.

That's not what Obama is trying to do, and that’s not exactly what Bush did.
The Bush's administrations fault is that they defeated Afghanistan, but got cocky and tried to take out Iraq. They defeated both countries, but were then left with two completely devastated countries. In other words, Bush made the classic flaw of starting a two front war, without handling all of the problems on the first front.
What Obama’s trying to do, is to send more troops to try and help the two governments handle their own land. That’s why Obama said told the Afghanistan and Iraq governments that they are going to pull out in twelve months. Although, who knows if that plan is going to work.
