I'm a little confused about the promote/demote feature. Why is it there? How does it work? Other than deciding which pictures get to go in the popular section, what does it do?
Firstly promoting. Why not just go by how many favorites an artwork gets? If I add something to my favorites, and forget to promote it, does it still get promoted? I don't think it does. But it should. Is promoting like saying "I like this but not enough to add it to my favorites"? That's a bit silly, I mean, are you really going to be harmed or inconvenienced by adding something to your favorites? It's as simple as promoting something.
It's not like someone't going to look through your favorites and say "OH! You like CRAP ART! I'm not going to comment on your pictures anymore!"
Secondly, why would anyone ever go to the trouble of demoting anyone's artwork? What's the point? If you don't like it, don't add it to your favorites, don't promote it. Why does there need to be a feature where someone can reduce the score of an artwork? I see plenty of good pictures with up to -8 in score whilst they are still on the front page. Why? Are there really that many jealous people out there who can't stand to see someone doing as well as they are? Are these votes coming from people hoping desperately to get into the popular section by reducing the score of all the other art on the front page at the time?
And worst of all is when I see good art with very low scores and absolutely no comments explaining why the art got demoted so heavily. What is the artist going to think? "Well, I'm shit, but there's nothing I can do about it. I should just stop posting art. I'm clearly not good enough to be here."
I think that the feature is probably there so people can bump stuff back out of the popular section if it isn't all that good, but why not just promote better art that you like more? Why can't that bump bad art out?
Evolution COV Says:
The promoting system was probably designed in the belief that users would upvote good artwork and down vote bad artwork. However, the creators did take in mind the fact that the majority of users on SA prefer bad fanart over good art.
Inter Says:
I do my part and promote stuff that's been unnecessarily downvoted. I also agree with you in that I see a TON of artwork with 15+ favorites and maybe a score of 3.
And the popular section often doesn't promote art, it just promotes random humor, often inside jokes.
But define "art." The last thing I saw with a -8 deserved it. It was a really bad Tails recolor.
Zetsubou Eureka Says:
It's bullshit. As I told someone else. the Downrate System is the Silent "Fuck you" To whatever art the person likes or to the person who makes the artwork.
Not many here want it removed, cause they'd rather have people still like them than go out on a limp and say how much they hate the person.
Antitime Says:
I don't really understand why I got downrated so much on my last picture if I think about it, other than the fact that it was unfinished. But when i put the finished picture up originally it was downrated the fuck out of, and I can't really think of a reason why other than people wanted their work or their friend's work up in the popular section instead of mine. It happens to my stuff a lot, it gets a score of 8 and 30 faves. I guess it's not a big deal but it's a bummer seeing how many people dislike it, almost as many who liked it enough to fave. It kinda hurts my feelings because I rarely downrate things, even if my stuff is in popular and about to be bumped off I'll rate up someone I think really deserves to be in there.
I think people should have to post a comment if they're going to downrate a picture explaining why. if they're downrating it then they should have some sort of critique to offer, that's my policy. ;(
