In Praise of MacGuffins - JoJo would like to point out here that the author of this article does not seem to quite understand what exactly a MacGuffin is. "MacGuffin" is a term coined by Alfred Hitchcock, to mean any object (or perhaps sometimes a person) which is the focal point of a plot which is about everyone wanting the object in question. For example, in Casablanca the letters of transit are a MacGuffin, because everyone is trying to get them. The Maltese falcon in The Maltese Falcon is a very obvious one, or the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings. In Akira it's more subtle, with the power of Akira serving as a MacGuffin, though it's being realized through the character of Tetsuo Shima. (Get it?)
