What is it with kids these days and singing their 'ers' as 'urs'?... I think Rihanna is to blame, she's polluting the voices of young and budding singers. ;-;
Tell me what you think.

...Pretty much all of what Rihanna sings is unintelligible. Or is it that I just don't like R&B.

Doodlibop Says:
Well, Rihanna speaks that way because she's from the Caribbean. So naturally, she has a little Island twang going on, other than that she speaks quite well. Now Li'l (nincompoop) Wayne on the other hand....HMPH!

I say English is an ever evolving language because it's not complete. Everyone should try their best to speak whatever language properly and avoid slang. But dialect is still valid as it's telling of the person's origin, heritage and culture.
My two cents.
Most people are lazy when it comes to saying their words properly, and thus words don't come out as they should. Others just don't care because its cool to talk in slang (which actually to me shows your intelligence to the highest degree better than anything else) and sadly their reasoning isn't unfounded as in most inner groups it is cool.
Can't stand R&B or rap myself, think its a waste of talent.
Don't mean to offend anyone out there that is into it, it's just not my thing.

hehehe yeah I feel you matt xD though coming from Texas and hearing alot of country slur that kind of thing is normal for me.
but we can't just only put the blame on one big mainstream star, there are plenty others you could look at :3
in the metal world I find alot of sounds start similar depending on the vocal style, for example Mike Williams in the agony scene when he screams the words beautiful and colorful they both sound the same, I guess it just matter's how your voice is and who your influences are.
also the fact that not everyone takes voice and diction classes nowadays xD

I dunno. Its more of a "togetha" for an example. The funny thing is when i was taking some classical voice lessons they recommended that? Or maybe its a combination of proper singing with her Island twang as doodz mentioned....
*shrug* Its odd, but sometimes its awesome.

Shut up an drive drive drive ella ella ella.
Yeah i hate that bitch.
Like, Doodlibop, the change in pronouncing certain words is because of her background. The same happens with country singers. It's not something that can be turned off easier or is it something that she is probably aware of.
My family of the Caribbean and have had family who have been here for decades and it doesn't fade at all, even some kids pick it up. Honestly, I haven't had to be a semi-translator for people with Caribbean call-ins at work because i can understand their dialect and slang like normal language.
Medjai Power Says:
Rihanna can't really sing. She just elevates her voice.
The err/urr thing is mainly for rappers bending syllables.
Kagorae Says:
I personally dislike Rihanna's songs in general, so I agree with you here. It's probably just her "style", although there isn't much class about it... I prefer the latin/italian songs I sing in choir

Oh you don't want to know what I think about Rihanna.
