This is a trend that I’ve noticed for some time now. Yesterday I posted the hippocampus piece to my gallery and it got a lot of favs and comments. Now I really enjoyed making the piece and I am pleased with the results but here I’m going to whine again, the number of favs and comments this got on my gallery sites (DA, SA, and FA) was ridiculous. Again, I am grateful of course for the comments but I spent 4 hours on this piece, and it’s just a single figure kind of floating there in the water and its received 31 comments and 165 favorites whilst the last EdenSphere page I did took well over 12 hrs, involved multiple characters/figures in complicated poses and action shots and one of the panels had a complete background! That page only received 7 comments and 45 favorites on the three galleries!
I know the comic page was a much more technically complicated thing to achieve then the hippocampus character piece but this is never reflected in the attention it gets. This doesn’t mean that I’m not going to make more comic pages and that I don’t like getting comments on my character pieces. I guess me just being aware of this trend helps. I know I need to just get over it and make the art that makes me happy.
Also I look at my own commenting habits. First of all I never comment enough. I browse through DA, FA and SA almost daily yet rarely do I comment. Rarely do I actually have the time to give an in depth comment and I feel rather sheepish just saying, “Hey, this is cool, I like it!†over and over again. Though I do that because something is better than nothing right? And I still enjoy receiving those comments as well. And I know that I don’t comment very much at all on individual comic pages and I ask myself why? Lots of them are great technical achievements yet I don’t comment on them as much as I do other pieces. I think it’s because I view them as a “wholeâ€, this page is part of the comic series and I commented once on that before so why do it again? So I understand the mentality that is happening there. I do favorite some things too. Usually I try to favorite things on DA, not on SA and FA because the users that favorite a piece are permanently recorded on the piece’s page in a list instead of just a blank number of total favorites. I like that. But yeah, I really don’t favorite many comic pages. Hmmm.
Ha, 45 favourites is nothing to snuff at. But I get what you are saying and it bring me to something my ceramics professor said. It's not about how much work goes into something, it's about the meaning and end result. I think that somewhat applies here, except instead of meaning it's entertainment value.
A comic is no longer solitarily art piece, but adopts narrative/storytelling devices. Just like a book, it's best to start at a beginning, and since the internet is based on the 'entertain me in 7 seconds' a comic becomes less interesting as it involved more time to 'get.' I do the same thing, I don't feel like investing time in reading a comic if I find out it's boring. However an actual physical comic book is more entertaining (to me) because the entire story is there and you can expect it's of some quality art and story wise (it got printed after-all.) I think you said it too, I don't see comics anymore as tiny compositions per panel, but as a whole story. I think you can expect a viewer to give you a comment at least once, and hope it applies to all pages.
I wouldn't beat yourself over not giving insightful comments all the time. I give myself a pat on the back when I can give a comment that I think will really help someone out. I've seen people who try to give that amazing comment all the time, and end up burning themselves out and never getting through all there updates. People also expect that same kind of commenting all the time which I can imagine can be frustrating.
Ha, I need sometime away from art sites. :/ Hope my opinion helps.

I'm ashamedto say I barely have time for sheezy anymore. I started college recently so my amount of submitions has dropped to virtually none and my comments are almost as rare. Things have to really catch my eye for me to even look at them. As for the comics / picture thing. What were the veiw ratings for them? I try not to look at comics because I don't wanna get 'hooked' on anything...tight scedual ya know? Besides that I prefer plain art to comics. Personal taste.
I also find myself drawn more to comment on things that have received less attention than I think they should, so if I see something with hundreds of comments I don't tend to bother. I really should, but I don't feel as compelled to do so.

At least you get comments... I'm lucky if I get one or two...

I think it goes on the audience perspective, a lot of people love aquatic art for some reason, and not many people like you look at comic stuff (even though it is harder to create) but instead of feeling chafed because you are not getting the comments you want on works that took more time to create, just be obliged with the attention you as an individual get. Your art always makes front page, and you have many people that pay attention to you, which I can say as one that is almost completely invisible on here, I envy you, people appreciate your hard work, even when you put little effort into it.
