Trogdor: "Merry Christmas" Vs. "Happy Holidays"

Trogdor: "Merry Christmas" Vs. "Happy Holidays"

Okay, here's the thing: A few years back, everyone said Merry Christmas. Do you know why? Because it wasn't about a religion! It was about something that was so important to our society that we decided that were just going to go along with it even if I disagree with the religion behind it.

What do people say now? "Happy holidays... You see, I'm saying happy holidays because I don't believe in Christmas, and I don't want to offend you, and I don't believe in it, and I blah blah blah blah blah BLAH!"

THIS OVERUSE OF THE WORD "OFFENSIVE" IS DRIVING ME OUT OF MY MIND! I mean, "Excuse me sir, which one is more offensive to you, the 'Peace on earth' or the 'Good will towards men' rhetoric?"

It is such a disingenuous argument! It is not real! "Oh yes, we want to say 'Happy Holidays' so that we don't leave anybody out." Really? How come there are a bunch of holidays in February, and you never hear anyone say "Happy Holidays", do you? They say what it is: "Happy Valentines... OOOH! Do you believe in love? "

If you don't believe in it, fine. But I've got a flash for you: Christianity happens to be the believe system of this country, whether you like it or not. Christianity happen to be the belief system of 99.9% of the founding fathers, whether you like it or not. Every single one of the founding fathers said that the Bible was to be used as the cornerstone for all the ethics and laws in this country. And they said that it should be taught IN SCHOOL so kids would know where their ethics come from!

So if you don't believe in Christmas, and you don't want to celebrate it, and you don't like it, God bless your heart. But if you think for one minute you're going to get me to stop saying it because it might offend someone, Hey I got flash for ya, I'M STILL SAYING IT!

If I have to endure one more stinkin' Christmas with people saying that it's offensive to say Christmas at CHRISTMASTIME, I'm going to puke... Then I'm going to take that puke, but it in a box with a big red ribbon on it, send it over to the ACLU with a big fat Merry Christmas sign on it!

i personally find that while happy holidays is more tolerant, the basic spirit of the season is gift giving and happiness, which is essentially what christmas is all about. thus the distinction between the religions is irrelevant, as they all celebrate peace and well being and god-worship. as such, any offense taken for this distinction is only an excuse to fight, which is one of the reasons wars start. these religions all are based off of the same theory of a higher power and a formula for peace and prosperity, which brings up a question of why people fight about it. it's essentially nit-picking at the way you believe in this, sort of like the way people might shun you for the way you walk or the way you look at things, which is also ludicrously stupid as there is no one way to do anything.

It is ridiculous for companies to stop saying, "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Chanukah" for the sake of not offending an extremely small but unbelievably angry minority. I don't have such a problem with "Happy Holidays", since it's derived from "Happy Holy Days," which refers to Christmas and Chanukah. :3

"Seasons' Greetings" is just a bit too silly for my tastes, though. It's like, Okay, what season IS IT for you? I just think it's stupid. D:

I think you should say what you want to say. If the person gets offended, then they must have some sort of rod or stick up their ass. Really now. I don't mind if people say "happy holidays" "merry Christmas" or whatever. To me it's just the seasonal way of saying things like "have a nice day" or "take care". If the person means well, then it shouldn't matter whether you celebrate it or not. Anybody who thinks "merry Christmas" is some sort of attack on their own beliefs should really learn to get over themselves. People need to chill out, it's only offensive if you get worked up about it.
