So I was thinking to myself one morning: If I ever take a fiction writing class, would they ever have me write a short story? I should prepare for it.

And I did. And it turned into something bigger, because I liked it that much.

The original idea began as this.
-Random girl in a magic school.
-She's very skilled, but she can't summon a familiar. The story begins with her second failure.
-After talking with a friend, she goes back to her home.
-Random side room used for practicing magic.
-She's sitting trying to come up with the proper formula, when it dawns on her.
-She attempts it once, then attempts it again.
-She calls up her friend, who arrives to find her grinning smugly at her.
-She asks him to help her dispel said room, now completely encased in ice.
-She takes the test again, and wows everyone by summoning a nine-tailed fox instead of the usual cat or something.

The fox has no real symbolism. I just thought it would be a cool idea when I originally thought of it.

Later that day, I made another character: A girl going to the school being used for dark magic. She's blind and wears a blindfold to show it.
This weekend, after thinking about how the ultimate plot would turn out, I made turned a somewhat unoriginal event involving the main heroine into an awesome moment. What it is would be spoilers, but the amount of people that did it first is a resounding two.

Pretty much the story centers around a girl in an alternate fantasy world. The technology level is around Victorian England, and there are a few prestigious schools centered around the learning of magic.
Magic is considered a scientific process requiring complex math formulas while drawing out a mysterious energy (nothing to do with the plot, just how magic works) to create natural phenomena by supernatural means. Can also get to that point of other effects, like barriers, enchantments, etc.
Chants are used to connect the soul to the magic, and are helpful ways to cast advanced spells (when one is at this point, simple spells require no chanting and can be instant cast. Example: fire balls.)

I just took a random idea, liked it enough, and decided to try and expand upon it. Might be a nice idea for a real light novel, and I want to try a more action oriented series. We'll see where it goes.

As for Chronicles of Terra, that's getting some rethinking done, which is a good idea, because the back story sounded overly complicated. Things are running a slight bit more smoothly again. We'll see how long it lasts.
