I am an otherkin, more specifically a therian.
Am I suddenly an idiot for believing that? Am I "stupid" for believing that?
It's a spiritual situation, as well as a psychological one. Someone who has an imprint or an internal connection to something non-human is an otherkin.
What the hell does that have to do with idiocy? Should I say all Christians are morons simply because they believe in God? No, because that would be inaccurate. Just because some are, doesn't mean they all are.
Should I say all British people are stupid? No, because that too would be inaccurate.
Should I say all anime artists are assholes and suck at drawing? No, because that TOO would be inaccurate!
Just because a few claiming to be otherkin say something stupid like "I'm an elvin princess!" or that they have humongous powers doesn't mean all of them are like this. Indeed, most otherkin are quiet, and do not go around flamboyantly expressing themselves as something "special", or better than humans like that elven princess.
Most otherkin understand they they too are human, they just have something else inside of them as well. Often the explanation is a past life, where they were not human, or something psychological where they do not "fit" with a general human's view or feelings.
Those that do nothing but whine or pass themselves off as extremely special or powerful are usually posers. Those shouldn't be taken seriously, and I understand that.
But the majority are not posers. This is a serious deal for them, just like gender or cultural confusion is for others.
If you wouldn't go around accusing gay people of being stupid or assholes, then don't do that for those being serious about being otherkin.
DK=Hardcore Youko fanatic!
Yukai Ureshii Says:
Thank you for saying this... Both on my submission, and through your journal. I just hope, someday, people will be able to see what they're doing and how silly and immature it is. Even if they originally thought it was the right thing to do.
Gryphie Says:
Unfortunately, its not just the outsiders from the otherkin community that take a dim view of otherkin in general, whether they quietly admit it or flamboyantly flaunt it ..or,indeed, are some deluded cosplayer (its been known to happen, especially with vampires, therianthropes and lycanthropes).
The 'community' itself needs to learn to get a grip. There are members I have seen first hand that add fuel to the fire becasue they are what they are and they know so but so-and-so can't be what they are, its impossible.
Unfortunately, the term otherkin is wide-ranging, but mostly a spiritual thing. And there is no actualy solid, light-bringing, proof you could hold in your hands and wave up to others to prove what you belive/know/feel/suspect you are.
The community should learn to respect each others beliefs and get a little solidarity between the ranks as it were or outsiders will never see anything serious there. Attacking and pulling eachother down is wrong.
Best thing to do from what I can see is to keep it quiet, share your thoughts and feeling with your close friends if you think you can take it. Waving it around like a banner is not advised.. and generaly compareable to waving a red flag to a bull.
Punk Jax Says:
I don't mind otherkin, but I just didn't like the poem. No offense to the author.
Jolie Says:
Okay, I'm somewhat familiar with Otherkin, but I'm not familiar with the term "therian". What's that mean?
Personally it bugs me that people give Otherkin a hard time the same as it bugs me when people in the sci-fi/fantasy community diss on the furries. I mean, how the hell is some geek running around dressed up in Klingon or any other sci-fi/fantasy gear any less eccentric than a fur suiter? People need to get over it and realize that, as long as no one is hurting anyone else, it's perfectly okay to BE WHO WE ARE. :-p I mean, sheesh... it's not that hard a concept to get, is it?
Media wolf Says:
People are afraid of what they don't understand. And that is not a statement of stereotypical ideas, it's a well known truth. Majority of people will run around screaming "It's evil! It's evil!" or "You're retarded!", rather than taking like 5 minutes to listen to what all the fuss is about.
I'm not a therian, altho it kind of describes almost in detail, what I am and what I'm not... It's just... well, the labels fail to stick on my personality, or at least every label, that I try to stick on myself just... Falls apart in quite short period of time.
I'm a wolf. Even tho I have a human body, I never actually felt like a human. And on top of all that, I seriously dislike human race due to the arrogance and narrow-minded nature, even tho I am quite fond of some individuals.
I just wonder of all the things, that happened to the word, evolution, revolutions, recognitions of different races and all together, at exactly which part they fail to understand, that some people *are* different then them?
It's just... Pathetic... There is no other word.
