So for my English class we were supposed to write a 1000 word essay, any subject just as long as it's controversial or whatever.

So I chose to write about video game violence and the effects it has on children. I don't believe it's the video games fault in the slightest but the parents who are more to blame. It's true. There's ratings on all games. It's not the creators faults that parents are too damn lazy to look at them before buying them for their "oh so innocent" child.

So I wrote my essay and the teacher tells me "Oh that's not right, nowadays parents aren't a factor at all."

WHAT?! Fucking retarded!

So now, I have to rewrite the entire thing by tomorrow morning.

I'm so pissed off.......

Then just add that citation where it is quoted in a .org site or something, make her eat her words. :>

Peri Says:

There is something already psychological that is there that causes whatever violence in a kid. Like bad parenting/emotional scares not video games. (Half of that was from my friend )

Good luck on the essay since your teacher seems to be missing some screws.

MWXIII Says:

Well everyone likes to blame something other than the person responsible e.g. the parent/s, I mean all this "OMG videogames make killer kids" used to be blamed on movies and stuff and probably something else before that. =\

Lilac Wood Says:

How are parents not a factor in their children's lives? I mean, true, there are some parents who just set their kid in front of the TV and let them go. Once the game is in the child's hands, the parent or legal guardian isn't as much of a factor in the absorption of the violence, but the parent can still get involved. The parent can talk with the child about the violence in a game and how hitting people with big swords isn't a good idea in real life. The parent can play the game in advance and decide to or not to give the child the game. If the child is older, the child will be able to weasel around the parent. There's no preventing that.

I'm taking early childhood psychology, and psych is not my major. I'm no expert. But I do know that within the "social psychology" class of psychology, psychologists say that how people act toward you effect how you act. It's all interactions. The social norms, the implied presence of others, the actual presence of others, their desires for you and actions towards you, all of them effect how you act. A child whose parents have talked with their child about violence is less likely (but still able) to beat someone up than a child whose parents just set him in front of a television and expected good results.

Parents aren't every factor. Teachers and peers are big factors. The video game itself is the factor you're really looking at, I'm sure. Still, the video game creators are not walking door to door and forcing video games down children's throats. And I definitely agree with you that parents who don't look at the content until it's too late are not innocent.

Ramble... Ramble...

Fanime234 Says:

Oh. My. Gosh. That really sucks! I'm sorry! Just hearing this.. Makes me so mad too! I totally agree with what you have to say...

Azndude Says:

Hrmm, well my opinion is the same as your's.

Me trying to think with your mindset...

Aren't violent kids already violent to begin with? So it doesn't matter much wither or not parents are involved since the kid already inclined to those violent behavior. What Lilac Wood said in the first paragraph is correct but the kid don't have to listen. Those who perform violent actions for sure have no regard for rule and law.
So, the parent are a factor, since they can take away the game, TV, internet, whatever but it still won't stop the violent kid violent tendencies from coming out. If its not entertainment, it might be the kid's peers that help the kid down the violent path or it just might come out on it own.

Meh... what causes a kid to go down the wrong path is a very tricky issue. A kid can have the best parents and environment that teaches them everything on how to be a good person yet... they can still turn to a demon child. So yeah, its tricky.

I personally think its the kid. Which makes things very complicated.
So yeah... I think he had you rewrite it because you pin it on the parents too much. Besides, who haven't heard this argument before? I personally heard it ever since I came online those many years ago. So eh.

-end rambling-

Rhythm Wily Says:

This is why I talk to my teachers about what topic I'm going to do in ANYTHING beforehand. Oftentimes they're not as "free" as one would think! Oh, and my friend did a paper/essay on the same subject. So you can always talk to him about it.

Sakurablossom112 Says:

That's just not right of your teacher to say something like that! That topic is actually very debatable and it can go any direction! Especially with the right sources to back it up! So, your teacher is an ass basically...they're just saying that their opinion on it makes more sense than what you had originally written up which is completely biased of them!! But in the end it's those damn f**kers that are grading it, so sometimes you just gotta change it for the sake of a good grade...which is also very annoying -__- Good luck though!

wolf5674 Says:

WHAT THE HELL ARE U SERIOUS??! She seriously made you rewrite it?? Whats the teacher's name?

Halkel da Thunderhog Says:

That's awful. KILL!!! KILL!!!
