I wonder if all my hard work is in vain--my stuff isn't half as exciting as some stuff from others who barely yawn and BAM, there's something on the screen/paper/what have you.
There's not much to be done if I'm doing all I can, right? As long as I can be happy somehow. Things won't fill the desire for acceptance anyway--success, shmuccess.
Aaanyway, I'm going to pitch a linear, storybook-ish, interactive game as my project for ActionScript class. It'll be like...a story you read and solve puzzles to advance in. Or something. Hopefully it'll turn out!
Fingers crossed that my work will get in the student show this year. Fingers crossed, but my breath is not held.

that would be awsome
I love stories like that

I think your work is excellent. Don't feel you have to live up to others' standards. Don't conform.
STICK IT TO THE MAN. And all that. Srsly. Your stuff rocks.
CafeCliche Says:
Ohh no, don't think you can get away with that. I seem to remember someone chastising me for worrying about being mediocre. (And are you as depressed as you sounded in your sign-off message? Don't make me come over there.)

Your art is your own, as is your style. It's not something you can compare to others, unless those others are drawing, line for line, what you are. The only thing to worry about are your own standards, and whether they're being met or not. If not, work harder. If so... well, work harder anyway!
And I always find your stuff exciting, as do many other people. So don't even go there.

I luffles your work.

I'm going to attempt to be helpful instead of just patting your arse.
Now, you've got a good foundation going. Good style, good expressions, etc. That's not the problem. I think what you need is more "drama." More pieces in which things are actually happening (I'm a hypocrite as I speak about this.)
Most importantly, though, I think it would do you well to experiment with color. I'm going to take a guess that coloring isn't your favorite thing to do; your palettes seem to be a bit on the muted side. Be bolder with your colors... throw in more vibrance, and experiment with ambient light sources.
Experiment with painting styles, too... I notice it's usually pretty easy to tell where you've used the smudge tool. Blend in your hues with a low opacity airbrush, and so forth.
Don't let yourself get so down in the dumps, chick.
Pssh. We all have that feeling. But, hey, if you're afraid you're stuck in a groove, then do something...different. Push the envelope. Do something you'll never think will work, and then make it work. Give yourself bizarre challenges, like "make a kickass portrait using all thalo green", or something weird like that. Keep yourself on your toes. And with every piece, think about what it's for. But your work is great, ya know. It's easy to see that you think about what you're doing, and you are working hard to improve, and make great things, and communicate...and all that's gonna set you apart.

Oh, I like your stuff!
EtherealMog Says:
I personally believe art is more about perception than most other things, as if you think about it, you'll think a piece is nice yet others think the opposite.
Therefore it's not so much that their work is 'good' but that you perceive it to be a good piece of work and, as such, your work has a similar effect on other people.
Though I think what your work lacks most is a feeling of difference, that piece you done with the person crouching down was awesome as it was so fresh, whereas usually your characters are face on- really contort them, dabble with perspective and try a new angle with your style.
Try different shading styles, different effects, different ways to produce the piece- try as much as you can to make every piece different, every piece alive.
Give it meaning.
Give it a worth.
Make it your own- do something you know you couldn't (or at least you think you couldn't) or even, draw something you don't usually.
There's no one answer to this as I've felt the same way before, it's just finding that line where it goes from blah to wowsers.
You've certainly got the talent for it.
Hope you feel better about things soon as your works are quite the inspiration to me and (rather selfishly) I'd love to see more!
