Sometimes things happen that just deserve a WTF.

So... I have a grand total of one piece of fanart. It's just a crappy sketch, but I like the character so I keep it. Granted, it's not the normal type of fanart you'll find, so I could understand people not realizing who it is. It's Deidre from "No Woman Born" (Short story by C. L. Moore published in Astounding in the 1940s. If you haven't read it, it's awesome )

Someone was flipping through my sketchbook, landed on that picture, and had a WTF moment. She apparently only saw that I had 'ZOMG Rie drew Fanart!' over it, since she immediately said, "I haven't seen her before, what anime is she from?"

I would have been more understanding of this if I didn't have "1940's post-humanism FTW!" written slightly smaller right under the first note. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I figured that the girl hadn't seen my tiny scrawl, so I explained who it was and a little rambling about the author, yada yada.

Thus begins much WTFing on both parts as I attempt to convince her that no, really, it wasn't anime, it's science fiction and written. And then she couldn't understand why in the world I would draw fanart of something that no one would recognize. And then other people chimed in just as confused.

Seriously, I thought the whole point of people drawing fanart was because they loved the characters, not because a million other people also loved the character O.o *twitch*

So now I'm drawing Shambleau as retaliation. Because I can. And if said girl (who I do see a lot and rather like) asks me to draw her something, she's getting one of the creatures from Simak's "Desertion" *evil*

Asbeel Says:

Good for you! There have been times that I've been tempted to draw some of the characters from my favourite books -- such as my Michael Moorcock or Sharon Lee and Steve Miller -- but then my own characters get testy and want to be drawn. Jenny even commented that I never do fanart anymore.

But yeah, more power to ya. ^_~
