Yeah, it's come to that point where I have to choose if I want to do 2D or 3D animation.

So can you guys give my your opinion?

If I chose 2D, it also includes alternative techniques. So that's like stop motion and cut out animation. An of course we'll cover flash and maybe some toonboom later on. Plus some post production in the final year.

If I choose 3D, I get to learn 3D modeling, animating and environments over the 2 years. It's all in Maya. I suck at 3D but I really want to learn both.

So if you could give me your views, pros and cons, or whatever... maybe it'll help me choose. I have to choose by the 31st of October. But I don't wanna hear "PICK 2D CUS THERE IS TOO MUCH 3D" "2D SUCKS, IT'S DEAD" etc, that's just childish.

My teacher said go with your strong points, I don't really know what they are... Maybe you do? Flash was all I could think of and that's not much to go by. Like, there are some people better at writing, other at storyboarding and concept design. It's not all about animating. o-o

Other than that, I'm still not back to being active. I've handed in 2 written assignments this week, and I have a 15sec 3d animation to do, a life drawing folio to show the teacher and about 100 inbetweens to draw plus finishing touches on my gestural animation. So I'm sorry if I haven't looked at your stuff much. I'm so busy ;~;

Thanks if you bother to give me your opinion.
And thanks for the 11k I got a little while ago.

Peace

Well, imo, there's more future in the 3D perspective, most animated movies are now 3D and if you ever want to work on a game, you'll need 3D. 2D is great as well of course but I just feel you'll have an 'easier' time getting a job if you know 3D. I can't really say anything more about it, sorry for being poor help >.>

Eddsworld Says:

for the love of god 2D, just because i think its much nicer to look at and so forth.
But if you did 3D animation that could be nice too, what with vectors and all.
Its a shame you cant do both like in some of the courses here..

giascle Says:

Depends. 2D is more talent-based, because 3D projects usually have much larger teams with each person doing a smaller part. If you want to get recognized, I think you should stick with 2D.

Unsung 1 0 0 Says:

I'd say 2D, as I would think it'd be easier and the end result would look better, but then you have to remember that 3D animation is everywhere today as it's what people want. But if you do one of those cant you do the other on like a night or weekend course?

Shadow Dinosaur Says:

Go with 2D and try some of those advanced techinques. But if you can do a bit of 3D styles fused in. But i would say stick with 2D.

Qwazin Says:

2D 2D 2D

It looks better (mostly), and is probably more fun to do. I imagine 3D just beeing like tweening. Plus, from what you wrote about what you'll be able to learn if you pick 2D, I'd totally go for that myself. Stop motion is badass. It's one of those awesome classic animation techniques that I thought would've died by now because of to 3D. Jin made a pretty good point in the comment above about 3D probably making things easier, but at the same time I think it's really good to have some 2D animators out there. If there ain't, 2D will probably die sooner or later. I mean, theres still plenty of 2D on television, but most of it is really flat and boring tweened stuff, and sooner or later I feel like people will probably just give up on it completely if there ain't enough creative people around.

The Mobile Sponge Says:

2D, easily

It's SO rare to see an American traditionalist now

3D is over done now, traditional animation is just better at this moment, just not practiced near as much as it should

mithon Says:

I don't think anybody saying '2d looks better or 2d is the original' is someone to listen to.
Sure if you want to stick to the traditional method then by all means, go with 2d.
However, job wise I'd say you'll have a much steadier enjoyable road with 3d animation, in most cases get to work with some company, big or small because it's a growing industrie. Your best bet with 2d animation is freelancing for people on the internet, unless you get really lucky and get into some mainstream TV cartoons.
As for strong points, you can say flash but how do you know you're not good at maya until you've given it a good try? At the end of the day both are animation courses which is a plus side, but trusting people like me who think they know something about it may not be a good idea, if you can go and contact a professional animator, he/she will be able to give you a better understanding.

good luck : D

RubberNinja Says:

I think you're asking a primarily 2D community here, most of which isn't looking at this realistically.

You need to make money out of this.

It's a big call. After the simpsons movie it's almost like the 2D animation industry is slowly coming back from the dead. Hell, there even making a Futurama film right now. Just as far as things go I'm not sure if there's much money in 2D, though I wish there was. Don't get me wrong, I love 2D to death. It's just you have to keep in mind that you're going to be trying to make a living out of this.

With 3D you're more likely to get into advertising, games, character animation, film, compositing. Whilst with 2D you could do some of this stuff, it's honestly just less likely to happen.

Personally I think that 2D is a great medium, one that is a personal favourite of mine.. But I think that you'd be more then capable to teach yourself 2D animation in your free time. You're already quite talented with it, I don't see why you shouldn't consider broadening your horizons as a animator.

I'm studying 3D on top of my past 2D experience simply because I want to be able to take every single freelance job, or offer that comes to my door.

So I say, go with 3D.

Wonchop Says:

Personally, I haven't really seen what your style looks like in 3d, though I think it might better with your style in 2D. Although, that does generally depend on who you have to animate for.
