I was wondering if anyone was willing to give me their opinion on nudity vs pornography. Do you think that if there is nudity the image is porn or do you think that something can be artistic and nor pornographic even if the subject is nude?
Why am I asking this? Because my most recent wallpaper (Broken), which features a nude, was removed from another wallpaper site because it was classified as porn/hentai. Honestly, I don't see it as hentai or even ecchi (say so in the description actually). I can understand that it isn't G-rated but just because something features a nude doesn't mean its sexual. This thinking is probably because my mom taught me at a young age to appreciate that there is a difference between art and porn. That the nude sculptures in the Art Institute were not bad, that showing the naked form of a human being can be beautiful and can represent something greater. Both my parents wanted me to appreciate artwork. Granted, if I was found browsing a porn site, I'd be in serious trouble but if there's a nude that isn't sexually displayed it would be fine.
Well, on SA there is an appreciation for artistic nudity. I appreciate that because I'm really proud of 'Broken', I was a little hurt when I saw it was removed. Then I saw why and I was upset because obviously the meaning behind the wallpaper wasn't clear.
I will not mention what art site it was because I don't think that would be fair. The mods there are just enforcing the rules as laid out to them and I understand that.

UGHH NEVER.... This is one subject i hate nudity on art isint considered porn look at pictures famous artits do they might have nudity but there not concidered porn
Porn invovles sexual acts. Nude is artistic, doesn't always have full nudity in it. Ironically, i read a whole chapter about this in a book today
necromancerman Says:
Pornography sometimes shortened to porn or porno, is the explicit representation of the human body or sexual activity with the goal of sexual arousal. It is similar to, but distinct from erotica, which is the use of sexually arousing imagery used for artistic purposes. Explicit Nudity
orn by definition,otherwise nudity=Erotica!
zerorush Says:
Porn is something meant to cause sexual arousal. Nudity in pieces that are meant to be artistic and express something can not and should not be classified as porn.

I have a feeling I know which site you're talking about and if it's the one I think it is, they delete a wallpaper of mine for the same reason, even though it didn't even show any nudity/sexual act!
Nudity can be artistic without being porn. Sometimes I think people take it too far; they're too worried about "protecting" younger minds from it. As if exposing them to a little artistic nudity is going to make them want to go out and have sex! Porn is explicitly made for arousal, artistic nudity is not.
Azndude Says:
Yeah, all naked anime character is porn. Har har...
Not.
Well to me anyways.

I think it depends. My bf is in an ethics class right now, and they were actually discussing this exact thing. I found a definition of it "obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, esp. those having little or no artistic merit." I think that this is the perfect definition. I think there is a difference between Artistic and Pornography. But theres another definition here "creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire" Does that mean that pornography is decided at the views discretion? what one person thinks can be TOTALLY diffrent than another person. I personally think nudity in general is not pornographic, unless its plainly intent on causing arousal, or is intended to be provocative.

okay I looked at the paper and well it has nudity, but it is a little hentaish to others i know of. but nudity can be consider porn for the reason it nakiess, and well we have major prevs these days.
kimichan09 Says:
Nudity is NOT porn. For simple reasons.
Kimiko
1. PORN is SEXUAL.
2. NUDITY = no clothes. NOT sexuality
3. Porn is just icky. DX
And whoever thinks they are the same, MEH!! to you! The naked human body can be beautiful! >( If you think its just a play thing, then go--do something life threatening! ><;;
Porn is just using the body as a toy, and doing nasty things with it. *barf* Thats just...wrong.
And I saw your 'Broken' wallpaper. Its not porn. Its actually VERY beautiful. ^.^ I like to see nudity in works such as yours, because it shows the person isnt afraid to say that the body is a beautiful thing.
gargoyle3000 Says:
Definately agree with you here. Your wall was in no way porn. In that context, the nudity of your piece seems like it was meant to convey more...vulnerability. The character is being broken apart, and is very vulnerable, and the nudity helps convey that point.
Also, I want to bring up another example of art vs. porn. Rodan (renaissance artist, not the rubber monster who fought Godzilla) did a sculpture of a man and a woman, both seated, kissing each other. Is that porn? It's naked people kissing, but the intended effect is not to arouse, but to inspire emotion. So, no, I don't think that's porn.
Anyhow, I'm on your side, and I think most artists are. Way to go, fight the power, and...well...the world is full of closed-minded people. Some sites feel that they have to cater to the lowest common denominator, and I'm certainly glad that sheezy isn't one of those sites! So, thanks to you, and all other site-admins!
