Basically if you get money sent to your Paypal account, the money stays in the online account. You can then transfer it from Paypal to your bank account, be it savings or checking, or pull from either to your Paypal account. There might be a slight transfer wait period, but otherwise there shouldn't be any problems transferring back and forth if you have already validated either your checking or savings (or both) account with them already.
For you to get money through Paypal from others, all one needs is your email account. They enter that, and then the amount they want to send, and their debit/credit card number so that the amount can be deducted and sent. If they have a Paypal account themselves, it makes it easier to do repeat sendings, as they will store that information (credit, debit, checking, savings...whatever you put in, as well as email address of people you've sent money to) online.
