I've wondered this question for years, and now that there are a handful of dedicated furry-fans watching this journal, I can finally ask it properly.

Some years ago (back in the '90s), VCL went through and banned all centaur artwork from their site. Some has snuck through the ban in more recent years, but technically, the ban is still supposedly in effect, on the grounds that centaurs aren't furry. They're within their rights to claim that, of course, but I've been wanting to ask the public about this for a long time; those of us who are into 'taurs tend to sometimes really feel excluded from the larger furry community.

So what do you think: Are centaurs furry or not? How about other 'taur forms, like nagas and mermaids and driders? Does furry necessarily imply "humanoid body, animal head," or does it more generally imply "half human, half animal?"

i, personally, feel they should be qualified as furry. i mean, they're not able to fit in any other category. besides, they DO have animal parts.

Tough subject. Personally, I don't view centaurs as furry. Maybe if the upper torso were animalistic as well (akin to the Chakats for example) perhaps then yes. But centaurs have always been to me a catergory on their own. Just because they don't fit in a catergory doesn't exclude them from being their own, does it? The fact that there are multiple examples of centaurs just makes it more obvious to me. When I think of centaurs, I think of the traditional horse x human, along with deer, wild cats, etc and so on, the winged versions, mermaids, nagas, driders, the hippocampus version of a a centaur, etc and so on.
