Hey folks!
I am curious. And you, yes, you have the answer to my questions!
Assume you wanted to commission an artist to do a drawing for you. What is the price range you think you could afford or think easily acceptable?
I'm not out right asking what 'Stephie' should charge, I'm just wondering what the average joe out there thinks is affordable.
Also how do you feel about the price of a limited edition print?
I thank you for your help! It's greatly appreciated!
Steph
Lilanth Says:
I can afford anything from $20-$25, but I hardly have that much money at one point in time.
vladetuczekovski Says:
Comissions are roughly $10-30 for fully coloured prints. Maybe 45 if they have backgrounds, but it all depends on the artist skill.
The better the artist, the more people are willing to pay.
$15-20 for lineart, $25-30 for fully coloured, $40 for coloured with background maybe?
Don't bother with sketches, no one ever wants just a sketch.
Limited edition prints could be any price. It depends on the size, content, artist and so on.
You could do a little wallet-sized card for $5 or a 10x30 poster for $300

It all depends on what the print is of, what size and how detailed it is. I never have much money, but for the average A4 coloured piece I'd say anywhere between $20-30.

Better question to have asked would be, How much can I charge for a commission that won't turn off the buyer before I've fulfilled the commission and received payment. I figure this is for commissions you do at home per the request of others. Then staying in the 20's should do you just fine. If you're getting complex commission requests that includes backgrounds & coloring, I'd add an additional $20 for the background and another $10 for the colors. If they want it inked, another $10, but give them free shipping & handling.
Mind you, nothing I've said is what you should follow rigidly, it's just so you have an idea of where to go with this. Now, prints, I'd charge $10-15 dollars as they're easier to sell off depending on what the imagery is. Best of luck to ya there though.
FireChic Says:
I'm going to start doing commissions soon.. and I was going to charge 20-$35, including shipping.. but that's just me! (Hmm.. like $20 for an inked lineart drawing, and again, including shipping, just to give an idea o_O)
And I personally would pay that much for a commission.. but I've never actually bought any, soo..
Hmm, I'm not sure about a limited edition. I've never really done any research in prices for those, so I guess it would depend on the print and the buyer. :/
Anyway, happy holidays, and I hope I helped you out some! :)
Poisonpoptart Says:
well it really depends on how nice the art is but anything from about $6-20.
tsuana Says:
mine are usually $20 for original 8X10 no colour, and $80-$150 8X10 - 14X17. (full colour, and depending on the work. This includes backrounds.) I might chage an extra $10 for an inked backround. paintings start at $100. tattoo commissions are full colour and are based on size and level of detail... in the end it's what you think is reasonable really. This works for me so far...
FyreNWater Says:
besides skill, it also depends on how well-known you are, and your customers. i charge very little (averaging $5) for my commissions since i'm just getting started and most of my customers are college students (translation: broke) on campus.
i'd think you charging $20 is good, even low for your art. ::nods::
my theory is if you get too few commissions, boost popularity and lower prices.
if you get too many commissions, raise prices.
...i don't get that second problem. T_T
Sailor X Says:
Don't ask me.. I'm cheap
Black Tiger Says:
I think between 10$ and 30$ would be reasonable!^^
