Rant/Journal about Anime vs Me!!! Please Read!!!
I was originally going to post this as a journal, but it unintentionally turned into a rant, so here it is as an entry instead
I am considering giving up drawing anime-style people. NO, this does not mean I will stop drawing people, and it also DOES NOT mean that I will stop watching anime!!!!
I am considering this change this for a few reasons. For one thing, I have been having more success with non-anime style art lately, and this includes faces as well as hands and body structure. Also, I've been looking at the sketchwork (online) of artists including Steven E. Gordon (artist for X-Men Evolution, Titan A.E., etc), and I am for some reason finding the style very appealing.
Another reason for this change, and I am sorry if some of you hate me fore saying this, but:
I am not Japanese, nor will I ever be, I do not live in Japan, and if I want to have any success in the art world, I can't rely on anime!!lol it%u2019s like some great realization I just had!o_0 There have been those Americans who followed their dreams of drawing anime as a profession, and the results were none other than shows such as Totally Spies, Code Lyoko, and Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi. Yeah, total embarrassments. It is extremely difficult to make successful anime style American shows due to the extreme culture clashing, and I%u2019d say the only real success out of the many attempts made, is Avatar. Avatar is a great show with complex storyline attributes, and yes, it is based on anime style art. Ok getting off topic here%u2026..
Last reason; and you will all probably hate me for this as well. An assload of American children and teenagers have been starting to draw strictly anime style art, and the number of people is ever growing. Look at the current situation. There are so few American-style artists left, that the only remaining ones, no matter how dumb their ideas are, need to be used to create the shows we watch today, and TODAY%u2019S AMERICAN CARTOONS SUCK!!!>< Seriously, ask me in a comment for some examples of the recent American crap cartoons I am referring to, and I will give you a list. lol really do it if you want to, I%u2019m not kidding

Ok that sounded really harsh

What I mean is don%u2019t stop drawing anime humans, but try and have an alternative so that you don%u2019t grow up to become the producer of %u201CTotally Spies in Space.%u201D No offense, but we really have to start bringing back the honor in American cartoons, and we can only do that by focusing on and improving our own culture, not Japanese culture. Let the Japanese people handle that!!><
Basically I am saying that me switching off of anime style will benefit my progression as an artist, my art style and ability, my future, and my individuality. So uh....that%u2019s it I guess and um...leave lots of long comments!

I have to agree.
great journal-rant.
I grew up darwing anime, 'cause it was so easy. But lately, everyone's been drawing anime, and now it's so unoriginal that I changed my style. (I don't have any recent pics here on sheezy, though T.T I should submit more.)
Anyway, now I rarely, if ever, draw anime. I see it every single day on every single website. It's so annoying --'
Let Japanese be manga-ka's, and let North Americans (I say that 'cause I'm Canadian) be cartoonists. 8D

i must agree as well. The whole situation is exactly like mine, and i do feel embarrassed because of those crappy anime-wanna bes.
through my anime loving friends in high school. None the less, i still can't do it. Maybe white people are genetically non-anime drawers or something, or its at least dominant.

I could never draw anime in the first place, but that was the only drawing technique i was shown (really small private grade school, no art what so ever ><
But maybe so many americans are attracted to it is because of its detail. The eyes and hair are so much more fancy than in marvel comics (not all but you get what I mean).
Erm, well u did ask for long comments

Agreed, but Code Lyoko was made by the French, not Americans.

ummm i have nothing to say
but its up to you if thats the right path take it and there nothing wrong with anything you said ^^
Merc Says:
I agree.
I think it's kind of hypocrisy for an American to say 'I draw anime'. Umm... You may draw in a style similar to the popular Japanese style, but anime is animation MADE IN JAPAN. Not to mention, there are tons of different styles. Really, there is no one set style that can be said 'this is anime' and 'this is not.'
I'm fine with people starting out by mimicking one of their favourite anime artists- It is how I began to really develop my drawing *I have a LONG ways to go, yet... And I've come a long way*- But eventually, people need to develop their own styles. Use similar eyes or hair drawing techniques, but don't be another clone.
RAWR!
Sorry... Prolly longer than you meant...

THAT'S IT! :3 That's why I love Titan A.E. so much! Because of the American graphic style and the beauty of the art. (Also cause Drew Barrymore voices xD) I have to try the style to see if I'm better at that. :3 Thanks for reminding me of the culture I was born into. I'm not Japanese, nor will I ever be. I'm Mexican American and I have to try those styles of art! :3
Hope you don't mind me copying you, but you reminded me of something so important, I must give it a try. :3
