What's he doing? Ok, basically in my world, mages need to recharge on their energy in order to cast spells. They use runes, shapes, and objects that they are naturally drawn to in order to tap into that area. Since Xan's mother was an elf and he was raised -sort of- in their society, he uses rocks, sand, or other nature things for his objects. Ciricles are just the shape he likes, since it has a feeling of completeness he hasn't found yet. The Runes are just, uh, elvish runes I guess? I just kind of drew those without much planning. lol
