Recently, a lot of american cartoons have been trying WAY HARD to mimic anime style. I have no problem with this, generally. In fact, in Teen Titans, I do like it. In that show, they keep consistancy within itself. Nothing seems out of place, and although streamlined, the art is nice.
Now, uh, MegasXLR... as far as Mecha shows go, it's got an interesting enough storyline. Not deep, but entertaining. The character designs, tho?
It's like they got a character designer who had never drawn anime style before in their life and yelled at them to "Make it anime." Then again, they might have had expirience and did it well but had to change it. I don't know. But the characters themselves compared to the props and scenery just look weird and out of place.
Anyways, I got anal retentive and bored today, so I did a more anime-like redesign of one of the characters, Kiva. I started to redraw from scratch, but I wanted the differences with only a few changes needed to be obvious, so I traced over the very basic skeleton design of it in OC and did the rest myself, trying to follow the costume and such as close as I can. In fact, for almost all the colors on the character, I just used the dropper and used the same ones. I only used three colors where the origonal design did, and two where the origonal design did (though I'm a three-tone girl, m'self).
Might try my hand at other characters, later.
Anyways, Kiva is © ...Cartoon Network? And the art on the left is, duh, offical artwork and not mine, I just put it up here for example.
Now I go to bed before I do other bored things.

Your version looks so much more...what's the word I'm trying to think of here...natural an the original version looks so...chucky, boxy, and out of place. I think your version would be so much better in the show. Great job!

I
Kiva to death ... they actually fixed up her design in the second season, much like the design you made (more naturally shaped face, less boxy eyes, etc.)

I love that show so much
vkyrie Says:
Definately a nice rendition (the only thing I prefer of the old one is her bust). You make her look much cuter but no less serious. : )
AnnieMae04 Says:
Well I think what they are trying to do is poke fun at all the animes. Not that they want it to be to much of an anime. I think it's a bunch of american fans that loved transformers too much.
I personally like the show. Your version is nice.

I think yours looks better as for the show it's a mix between american and want to be anime basicly I see the show as a comedy that tried to make fun of anime and want to be anime american cartoons lol it's not my kinda thing but eh if bored it's watchable

I love that show! She is too cool! Great job! I like how you drew her!
Dalus Says:
I'm pretty sure it was their idea to mock anime from the get-go. Lots of things about that show make fun of animes, so I don't really think they were trying to hit the mark dead-on when it came to character designs... Nice pic, though.
CalicoAngelwolf Says:
I really like how you drew her. I'm not sure if you read newtype but they had the UGLIEST looking Kiva i've ever seen
;; Not to be mean, but her eyes were on the side of her head. All my friends laughed too. Kiva's a fun one to draw. Jamie is the best though
Yaoi Huntress Earth Says:
The eyes are especally wonderful.
