Completed: April 2003
Do you remember the way that you touched me before
All the trembling sweetness I loved and adored
Your face saying promised whispered like prayers
I don't need them
Oh, I need the darkness
The sweetness
The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this..
This is my self-portrait entitled "Sub-Rosa" done on black satin (You can see the black satin showing through as my hair) primed with gel gloss medium in oil paint.. I thought that the title was rather fitting.. During critique, my professor mentioned that it looked rather mysterious because the texture under the skin hints that something is hiding underneath.. The interplay between what is "beneath" also adds to it, as the hair is over the face and obscuring the right eye, but the painting of the face is actually over the hair..
A boy in my class actually commented that he wished that I painted the right eye.. I intended to leave a hollow gap there, as a symbol of my vision.. I have been blind in my right eye since childhood, so my left eye dominates.. In metaphysics, a person who is left-eye dominant views the world through emotions while a person who is right-eye dominant experiences the physical and active part of life..
