i realize that today, those new to the comic will see grey as a very abrasive character.
in reality, he just tells the truth. he doesn't bullshit, he doesn't sugar coat, he doesn't keep facts he's figured out to himself when he thinks someone else might want to know them. and he only speaks when he has something to say.
