I Give You a Spanner

I give you a spanner,
And you look slightly confused,
Like the way you looked at me,
Right back at the start.

Like its coat,
All shiny and new,
No bent reflections,
This is what you get.

It is kept separate from the others,
You favour this one,
You take pride in keeping it safe,
From nasty gashes and dirt.

It is used as a tool,
To mend and to heal,
To bring close and to create,
As well as make that babies Crib.

However, It weathers slightly,
And rusts around the edges,
Perhaps a harder scrub with that cloth,
Will remove those greasy stains?

We were asked to describe 'love' using an extended metaphor.. So A spanner was the first thing that popped into my head xD

A romantic Poem Inspired by Carol Ann Duffy's 'I give you an Onion'

Year 11 English Literature course
