Ahhhh, the Victorian Gothic novel...Oh, no, wait. Edwardian. It was published in 1909. Oh-ho.
It feels like it's been a while since I did one of these black and white pieces like this. I had fun with it. I was thinking about some of my favorite B&W artists, while I was working:
Aubrey Beardsley,
Hu Jingxuan,
Kathe Kollwitz, and our own
Hagelstram, as well as
Egon Schiele and
Jinyoung Shin. Inspiration.
(Psst. Let us not speak of Joel Schumacher, okay?

The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet, their mothers, the box-keepers, the cloak-room attendants or the concierge. Yes, he existed in flesh and blood, although he assumed the complete appearance of a real phantom; that is to say, of a spectral shade.

Ohh~ I really like this... I noticed that it was plain black and white (images that I really love, stark contrast gets me happy)..

AWESOME..

lol, this is awesome. I loved the book, the original movie, and I actually got to see a performance of the musical on Broadway, NY. I liked it a lot, but I couldn't help but notice that the main melody of the chromatic descension was completely stolen from the Pink Floyd song, "Echoes."
Now you know.

Loved the book (so few people know Phantom was a french novel) and the musical (saw it in London live, WOOOOO). Great pic, really captures the theme of the original medium.
