Chapter 8 - Be All My Sins Remember'd
“Well, we have to do something.” “What CAN we do?” “You tell me, Jack! You’re the one with all the bright ideas!” Tara snapped. “Well, we have the ship… and a piece of 10, so… that leaves us one more piece to find… so, who knows where the last piece is?” Tara turned to Catherine who was sitting on the sofa, her head in her hands. They were at her house, a cottage in a nice, secluded area, 2 miles north of central London. Catherine looked up. “Oh right… erm, yes, the last piece… well; we managed to compile a map of all the possible places it could be. So far we’ve checked all but 2 places for the last piece – we didn’t find them in sequence – and it could be here or here” she spoke, indicating areas around Edinburgh and Cambridge. “Okay. We go there next. In the morning. We’ll find this last piece, don’t worry.” Tara spoke. Catherine smiled.
“Mum?” Alice, Catherine’s mum had entered into the room, holding a piece of paper loosely in one hand, her smudges makeup indicating most obviously, something was wrong. She sniffed. “I… It’s for you… Catherine. It’s… it’s from the Prime Minister.” Catherine took a sharp intake of breath. As her mum handed it to her, she skimmed it and swallowed hard. “There’s to be a hanging. In London. Tomorrow.” “WHAT!” Tara exclaimed. “That’s ridiculous. Capital punishment was banned centuries ago… well at least in this time it would have been.” Catherine shook her head. “It was reintroduced.” “That’s disgusting. It was terrible the first time round and now they’ve reintroduced it. Who would do that?” “The prime minister I guess.” Jack added. “Who’s going to be hanged?” Tara asked Catherine, saddened now. “Me.” There was silence.
