Description

The native people known as Yawalapiti live in the Xingu National Park in Brazil. Once a year at their most sacred festival, the women are allowed to don the men's headdresses for their special women's dance. Only the men are allowed to cary the carved humming bird spirits mounted on sticks. A Xingu girl was asked about her life as a Yawalapiti. She said she said that women have to work much harder than the men and the men do not respect them. She said she is not entirely happy as a Yawalapiti.
