Taken at: Columbus Zoo in Ohio
Species: Red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis)
When I first arrived at the holding pen for these two, they were both on the far side of the pen, by the fence. After a moment of observing from one wall, I moved around to a vacant wall to get a better look. The moment that I moved, one of the cranes started walking toward the wall that I had been standing at (by this time, there were about four or five people standing along it, including my mom.) Suddenly this beautiful bird, turned and started walking to me. I'm not entirely sure if it was because I was the only one leaning against the barrier or if it simply sensed my nature. Regardless, he or she provided me with some very good photographs.
Also, these birds (like most other crane species) are highly endangered. Please, please support conservation of these animals by making a donation to the International Crane Foundation (https://www.savingcranes.org/) or simply by keeping your environment clean and educating others. We are their voice, don't let them become silenced forever.
