Commission from the
Tucson Jazz Society.
What a great night! The TJS brought me out to the (Oh-so-fancy!) Starr Pass Resort for a concert by
Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. I spent the whole show working on this painting of the performance. (I finished up right at the end of the final number--Perfect timing!) After the show, the entire band signed the picture, and this was given as a raffle prize to a lucky jazz aficionado.
(And can these guys
play, man! The joint was
jumpin'! Phenomenal swing jazz, full of life and humor. Dance floors were set up on either side of the stage, and they were never empty. "Red hot" is right!)
This was a definite challenge--working really fast (two sets and an intermission), in the dark, trying to peer behind music stands and such to see everyone, but it was a
blast!
