This was my costume for HMS Pinafore. When I tried it on for the first time I was feeling pretty fancy in my petticoat and empire-waisted dress, until they handed me an apron. But the apron came in handy last night when I noticed a tear in the side of my dress, which the apron handily hid.
I was playing a doxie, which means I was a common merchantwoman, whereas the other half of the women's chorus were playing Ladies, namely, Sir Joseph's sisters, cousins and aunts. Their dresses were consequently much fancier, but they didn't get to wear that styling apron that looked filthy even though I was only selling books.
