This was done as my Drawing II final. The theme was Thinkism where we had to pick a topic/issue (more on the political/social side) and draw it out on a sheet of paper(or pieces) about 4 18X24 pieces of paper. For more details on Thinkism and the project go here->http://rhythm-wily.deviantart.com/journal/15485928/
Anyways, I chose Dress Codes/Uniforms in school. I'm actually against uniforms but for dress codes because essentially ALL schools are going to have dress codes(if they're not going to do the uniform thing) because you're not going to go to school naked or in your underware, now ARE you?
Well onto the picture! There were no specific ages given to the figures except that they're school aged. I felt doing specific ages kind of defeated the purpose of the drawing anyways.
The first figure on the left shows my approval of skirts above the finger tip rule because I see that get abused by teachers(I've almost gotten sent home for wearing SHORTS that stopped at my INDEX finger and not my MIDDLE finger). I think skirts that stop at the base of your fingers is a better way to do this w/o odd misinterpretations or borderline stuff to occur. The tank top is also in referance to a story I heard about some girl getting in trouble at school for wearing a TANK TOP at school in the SUMMER TIME! The wavy hair was in referance to Japanese schools(not saying all but at least one) not allowing perms in the hair. There was even a story of a High School senior getting expelled for having her bangs curled for graduation. I also chose to use the complementary colors blue and orange along w/ metallic trim to her clothing for fun.
The figure to her right was the first one I started on and that inspired the project. It was actually inspired by my little cousin Isabella. I went as crazy as possible to basically show the idea of a child being allowed to throw together any outfit she wanted and walking out the door. Sure, people may stare...But she doesn't care! She has a big smile on her face and is proud of herself because she got to chose her outfit! Complimentary colors of yellow and purple on her shirt, neon green on her dress, a stocking w/ flat patterned diamonds(matching flat pattern crown on shirt) on her stocking w/ an orange cotton sock on her other leg.
The boy to her right is mostly against color gendering and stereotypes like wearing purple or pink as a boy meaning your were gay. I also had a fleece cat hat because I don't see boys wearing those in public(especially at that kid's approx. age!) except at anime conventions.

It's hard to see but on his shorts is a little symbol(my little owl shaped signature thing) for dress codes that are against any type of logo or emblem being on clothing (ie;nike). I also went matchie-matchie w/ the clothing as well since that's pretty common in children too. I used an older picture of my cousin William for basic referance.
Last one at the very end and right of this huge image was probably the biggest rush of them all. I did dyed hair for him (another thing not allowed in Japanese schools), logo depicting alcahol (I thought I'd get away w/ some text in this project

), baggy pants (some people are talking about banning them outright now!), and piercings in the left ear(at a school I was going to people would say a guy piercing their left ear meant they were gay).
Overall about the background I made a seperate random background to show the individuality of each character. The girls had more whimsicle back grounds while the boys had more strong and geometric back grounds. After doing the girls' shapes I decided to make the boys' back grounds outlined in black as well. The back ground was done completely in prisma and copic markers for a more whimsicle feel. I used as many colors as I had to show variety in the girls' shapes. The first set of shapes I thought of as spot lights but they could double as roses or swirling circles I suppose. The second set of shapes I just used random things I'd maybe doodle in my notebook or on things when I was bored. The blue back ground on the left hand side of the composition is to say that I also aprove of girls wearing boyish clothing. This is also why I have pink supporting the right side of the composition (boy's side) saying that boys wearing girly clothing or pink is fine w/ me too. I also chose to do primary colors on the right side of the composition to show the lack of variety in clothing when comparing men's and women's clothing. This is also repeated by the choice in shapes.
There's alot more I could say about this piece but I'll just stop here and say that I used prisma pencils,oil pastels, pirsma and copic markers along w/ intense pencil undersketching. I'm not sure on the time but it took AT LEAST 18 hours to complete.
EDIT-Oops! Forgot to show referances! All photos are stock and PD for your use.

Wow, this is really neat! It's not often I see work on SheezyArt with a meaning behind it, especially one that related to society. It's a really great idea and I agree with you completely. I beleive that as long as the wearer of the clothes is wearing it appropriately than it should be allowed. For example, Two girls can wear high stockings. One girl may wear them mismatched or baggy, and generally have fun with them and make them cute. However another girl could wear them and perposely flaunt them and use them only as a way to draw perverted attention to her legs and stuff. That's why it's hard to have fair dress codes, because some people ruin fun clothes for everybody. They should respect the fact that some people want to wear them unprovoctatively(LOL SP).
Your art presents the topic and your opinion very neatly, it's really nice. The message is clear and the artwork is very nice on it's own as well. Good job! ;0;

Wow, I swear thats me all the way on the right there, Baha! Beer drinkin' ear pierced Teal haired Sen. I really do have my left ear pierced now too, I got it to remember that I quit smoking. I always heard the left ear means you're straight. But then again, I know huge bodybuilders that pierce thier right ears just because "They're taking it back".
So I think it doesn't matter. Then again thats why Tealboy synchs up with me so well. =3
