12:05
The needle in my arm is burning by this time, even though they just put it in. I’m staring at the ceiling. Trying to make pictures with the patterns. Counting how many tiles there are in each row. How far they go, are they straight? Hey…I’ve got nothing else to do, right?
The table starts to move up. The ceiling moves past me slowly.
Click. Click. Click.
I’m completely vertical now. It snaps into place and I’m left with nothing to look at besides glaring eyes. Even through the thick glass I can feel their gaze burning…searing my skin with each twitch of the eye.
With my arms outstretched on both sides on the hard surface, I feel like Jesus.
I’m sure that they don’t believe it to be the same way…
A fat guard wearing a blue uniform motions to me.
“Last words?”
“I have nothing to say.”
With that, they snap me back down. There’s the ceiling again…
One of the tall men nods to another, and the other pushes a button. They walk away and they put their hands on the back of a young nurse and lead her out of the door…you know, like when you’re little and your teachers do that to hurry you somewhere? Like that.
Her face is red, and she looks like she’s been crying. Well…she was the one who put this damn needle in my arm.
Poor girl.
I glance over at the tubes of liquid. The first one is almost gone…and suddenly. I feel drowsy.
Stop the heart…implode the lungs…stop the heart…implode the…
My eyelids are unstoppable. They’re closing like big red curtains at a bad elementary school play. Once you start pulling the ropes…they don’t stop.
One last thing to look at before they close completely… The clock…
The clock says 12:05
