A Glass of Diamonds

A Glass of Diamonds

“Would you like a drink?” he asked me
And, jokingly, I said -
“Diamonds, please, if you have them;
Ice cold, with sugar, no milk.”

And to my surprise he fetched me
A slender glass of diamonds
Sparkling, shining, bending light;
Sugar drifting through, dust in sun.

And when I came to drink it…

Just as I asked, it was ice cold,
And slipped down my throat like an eel,
Clean and clear, sugar-sweet,
With an after-taste of thyme.

So that was my glass of diamonds,
A strange and uplifting refreshment,
But I’m sorry to say that the very next day
I was heavily, heartily - sick.

Description

In this one's keywords is "xenia", the Ancient Greek word for the rules of hospitality. I have fun with keywords, yes I do.

Classic (or over-used) rhyme in penultimate line.

Basically, in Chemistry we were talking about allotropes of carbon (diamond, graphite, buckminsterfullerene I LOVE THAT WORD) and how they sublime at high temperatures...and then someone asked if you get liquid carbon. Imagination did the rest. =)

That's really cool! And it seems to have come about from an intelligent way rather than "I was bored, so I wrote this." Good job!

I love how intricately woven this is. And you're a lover of words!

Written wonderfully. I like your reasoning behind it. I also like the fact that you are daring and didn't bother to incorporate tired phrases and poetic clichés. This a refreshing poem, by any standard!

I couldn't imagine someone not getting sick from drinking a glass of diamonds. A very interesting poem, I must say it certainly
entertains.
