Deadly Serious

I know that this may offend some people here, but I will never support the death penalty for any level of crime whatsoever. Whether it's homicide, child abuse... anything at all; to me, it runs counter to everything that I believe in.

I believe in the sanctity of human life, and to me, murdering murderers is not a valid function of the law. Some may think that I am viewing this purely from an outsider's perspective, that I am not personalizing this. All right, now I'll hypothetically personalize a situation.

Say, my sister or my beloved April was murdered during a felon's armed robbery of a grocery store. Would I mourn for my dead? Absolutely I would, and to be honest, I don't believe that I'd ever truly recover from that hypothetical situation. However, killing a killer will never bring back a loved one, save for the memory of your loved one.

How would capital punishment make you any better mentally or morally than the killer? How would legally-sanctioned homicide be any different than the homicide that took your friend away? Or, hypothetically, my sister or April?

Truthfully, I would never forgive the felon for what happened, but I would visit him or her in prison and say, "What you did was cruel and a sin before God. I pray that you will understand how much misery you've caused. I pray that you will understand how many lives you've destroyed through such a selfish act. I will not hate you, but I will never forgive you for what you did. May God have mercy on your soul."

We discussed the nature of the death penalty in today's political science class, and afterwards, I felt compelled to write the following. These are my beliefs, and I ask not that you necessarily agree with them, but respect them as a reflection of what I believe dearly.

I agree with you whole-heartedly. Murder is murder no matter what, and that includes the killing of criminals.

FriendLiiFiRe Says:

This doesn't offend me!!!
I agree and I also believe in the sanctity of life! Who are we to say who's life should end? Beautiful writing, man.

FyreNWater Says:

never made much sense to me to punish a murderer with murder...

eibhlin Says:

I can certainly understand your point of view, I am somewhat uncertain as to where I myself stand on the matter. For me it is a bit of an internal debate between do you keep the person alive and make them have to serve out time for their acts...if ther person is in fact undeniably guilty of heinous crimes, is it better to end their life than to risk them ever being among society again...and who are we really to decide if someone lives or dies...you know, that sort of thing
I think my problem is that I can, even if it is some small form, relate to almost any side to a degree
or atleast empathize?

anyways it's late and I am rambling

Leon DarkStar Says:

Death penalty for parking tickets. It's the only way.

If someone is given life without parole I believe they should have to option to ask for the death penalty. Ya know, put it in there hands.

ThatsCrazyGirl Says:

You have very good points within this. Also what about the killer's family. Sure. They probably aren't too happy with them for killing someone, but its just another death, hurting alot more people.

Though I agree with what you say. I on the other hand would want the person who killed my sister or anyone else close to dye, or have a life sentence and be forced to face the facts every day of how the loved ones are hurt because of the death, untill he/she crys about how sorry he/she is. Though. Im also the kind of person to be filled with revenge. =\
