Cerisy's Sphinx

I found this insect totally by surprise just as I was heading out the door for work. Outside my door I had this bucket I used for my job and was to my left, oddly, I turned to my right to turn all the way around and that's when I noticed this HUGE moth hanging out a foot and a half away from my door. I freaked out at first and ran straight into my house then calmed down from being so spooked. I peered out my window and there it was, that same moth sprawled out on the screen of my window just sitting there chilling. I calmed down when I realized it was a moth but the sheer size of the thing was immensely intimidating but I was curious to find out how big it was. I got this extra long artist's ruler out and measured him up by aiming the ruler close, but not near it enough to spook it in flight response (God I would've screamed like a girl if I saw that thing take off in flight...)

Because I couldn't get an accurate reading of the ruler from being so far, I estimated it to be around 6.5 inches wide wingspan... and the body itself at about 4.45 inches.

I'd seen moths like this before on the job but NEVER one at my house and I was almost privileged to see one this close without it taking off and terrorizing me as most of the mutant sized insects would here in Arizona. I wasn't sure what it was called at first, never SEEN a moth like this before so I did some research once I got home.

It ended up having a really cool name called the "Cerisy's Sphinx." As much as it was cool yet intimidating to see one, I really hope I don't see it again LOL. Wouldn't want to know why it was hanging out at my apartment in the first place.
