According to legend, when Christopher Columbus explored the New World, he encountered a race of men with the heads of dogs. Dog-faced and dog-headed men are known as cynocephali. They have been in Pliny the Elder's Natural History, and were also reportedly spotted by Ferdinand Magellan.
