There's an easier way to get rid of the white background:
1. Open your sprites in GIMP, Photoshop, or any other program which can handle transparency.
2. Make the background transparent (If it isn't already)
3. Cut the sprites up frame by frame and save them in unique .png files with transparency.
4. In flash, go file>import>import into library and choose all of your .pngs of sprites
5. Save the .fla in (What should be by default) C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\Configuration
6. When you open a new flash, go in Window>Common Libraries>"Your sprite collection flash's name", and take out whatever you need.

That's how I'd do it, anyways...
